How to get songs off your iPod w/ iTunes rss

PART 2 of the quest to own our music!

So the resent ASK THE BUZZ question was

The Question: How do i get songs that are on my ipod into my music library on itunes?

I answered it here but through searching I have found an even easier way of doing this. First things first, we still have to prep the ipod up a little bit.

1. Enable your iPod to act as a disk drive.
To do this plug your iPod into your computer and open iTunes. To enable this method, right click on your iPod icon that is in the left hand column and select iPod options. Once this has been selected you should have a screen that has 2 sets of tabs. The first (top) tab should be set to iPod. The inner (middle) tab should be set on music. If you look on that screen there is a empty box that says ENABLE DISK USE. Click the box and click ok. Once this has been completed we can now close iTunes, (or leave it open). Now go to ‘My Computer’, and see if your iPod is being recognized as a disk drive. Your iPod should fall inline after any extra hardrives or CDroms and should read ‘Removable Disk’. If your iPod is showing up, great! You have completed step 1.

2. Enable Hidden Files
This next step requires us to actully see what is on the iPod through windows explorer. Double click on your iPod icon. Once it’s opened, go to Tools > Folder Options and click the View tab. You’ll see a bunch of different options for the way Windows displays files. In the Hidden files and folders section, select “Show hidden files and folders”, then click OK. Then close that window. Now we are able to view hidden files. If you would like to change your settings back, follow the same steps except choose: Do Not show hidden files and file folders.

3. Now we are ready to go find our music on our iPod.
After hidden files are visible, you should see a new folder in your iPod. The folder name is Ipod_Control, and should look greyed out. Note: All hidden folders are greyed out, in order to distinguish hidden files from non-hidden files. Enter the Ipod_Control folder and click on the Music folder. Here you should see a bunch of folders that have F00, F01, F02, etc… Each folder contains about 50-70 songs. If you click on one of the folders you can open it and see that your music is there. The only problem with this music is that it is all renamed to random letters and numbers which I will get back to. If you want to back up your whole iPod, which is recommended if you have the diskspace. The last step we need to do is unhide the Music folder and subfolders that the music on the iPod is in. First go to your iPod as a hard drive, Open iPod_control, and you should see 3 folders greyed out. If you do not see iPod control see step 2. Click on the music folder and right click it and select properties. There should be a section that says attributes. Uncheck the hidden box and click apply. It will then ask you how you want to apply these changes. Select the “apply changes to selected subfolders and files” and click ok. Now your files should be visible for itunes to see them.

4. Import songs through Itunes using CONSOLIDATE.

This step is by far the easiest. First open itunes. If you would like to make sure only files from your iPod are backed-up/moved than take everything out of your iTunes library. You do not have to delete the files. Keep them but move them out of your iTunes Library. IMPORTANT It might also be a good idea to have your iPod manually update for now, so you do not lose your entire music collection. To do this click on Edit tab, and click preferences. Choose iPod and first tab, Music. On the third selection you can tell your iPod to manually update, meaning you drag and drop things you want on it(you can always change this later). Now we are ready. Next choose file from top menu, and add folder to library… Now browse to the iPod that is acting as a hard drive, click and open iPod control, and you should see a music folder now. When music is blue select ok, and watch all your songs from your iPod be imported into iTunes. Now that these files are in iTunes you see that the funny letters and numbers for each song do not show up anymore. Now we have our songs in the library and the actual song files are still on the iPod. If you were to disconnect your iPod the songs would not play in iTunes. To copy all songs in your iTunes library to your computer we will use the consolidate feature, which will bring all songs from your iPod to your My music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ folder and sort the artists into folders nice and neat. Beware: This will take a little while to do so you may want to do it when you do not need your computer for a while.

Now wait and you have all of your music backed up or restored to your harddrive, all using iTunes! Thanks again Endgaget for the picture!

Thanks for reading and enjoy YOUR music! Thanks for asking the question Nathan your free song is on the way!

  3. Good stuff. There is an easier way to do this though. If you don’t mind downloading a program, just get “ephpod.” You can just hit a button and it will back all your songs up onto your computer, sort them neatly into folders, and all of that. Personally, I think that is a better way to do it.

  15. This is pretty handy actually for those of us who have no aspirations of “leetness.”

In addition something I found out, is that if you skip the steps where you Explore through the ipod and turn off the “hidden” attribute, you can perform tihs inside itunes, when you go to “File->Add Folder to Library,” browse to the ipod, right click on it, and select preferences, then uncheck the “hidden” attribute.

  16. Actually, Sharepod is a free program. It goes directly on your iPod and runs from your iPod. You just select the songs you want and download it. $25 saved and you can share your songs with all of your friends without memorizing a pain in the ass way to show up a bunch of fucked up filenames :) Enjoy!

  46. I’ve read through some posts and from what I gather, either the this How-To works perfectly or completely screws your Library up. Is the key thing here to move everything in the iTunes library out first? What happens if I don’t move the files out of the library and just have my iTunes & iPod set to manual update? Would this How-To work if I only have a handful out of the thousands of songs on my iPod that I wanted to transfer to my computer/iTunes?

    Thanks!

Of course, ha, the trick with me is i’ve got a mini that still is working well that only holds a quarter of what my library owns. Sigh.

  68. Well this worked for me, getting the music onto iTunes, but I copied the songs and pasted some into a folder on my computer and it was in the same format as it was in the original folders from ipod_control. I would try using iTunes to put them onto my computer, but someone said that messed everything up, and with the luck I’ve had with my whole ordeal, I really didn’t want to risk it. So then I found another way to do this with Winamp! and while I’m still running it, it’s working so far! I have Winamp pro (I didn’t buy it I got it by file sharing, but whatever). But I just went to “portables” in the media libary, selected all, copy to local media, and when you copy from local media that puts them into your music folder automatically, and stays when your ipod is disconnected. I don’t know if anything will turn up wrong in the end, but this is working very well so far.

Maybe the update awhile back fixed this?

You guys are crazy for trying this, cause 9 times out of 10, you’re going to lose everything. I did this method for only 10 songs, out of my 500+ Library, and now i have 0 Song in it, and a bunch of errors when I try to Add those folders with things like (F844749384). Thanks jerk !

  98. When you consolidate your music to copy into your itunes folder make sure you enable the Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized feature in the Preferences on the advanced tab. This will change the title of all your files to match the song title when copying music to the iTunes Music folder. Without this feature enabled the music will still sort into folders by artists and subfolders by album but the files will be in the somewhat random letter and number titles that you see when viewing them on your iPod as a drive.

  103. Thanks, man! My computer is copying at the moment, 60GB in total, about 2/3 of my classical CD collection. A peace of mind, finally.

Actually, I found the steps very simple and logical. The essence is “add a folder to library”.

BTW, maybe you want to add one sentence on what “consolidate” library means. It took me 5 minutes to figure it out (I haven’t used iTunes much).

Thanks also to the guy who commented on enabling the “Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized” option.

  105. Thanks for that, you’re a lifesaver. My ipod has been playing up and it took me absolutely ages to get the music on it. For some reason, the music was not saved in my library. Now it is.
    Cheers

  108. Every time I choose to update my Video or Photo on iPod it asks for sync and erases all music files if not available on my PC. How to add movies or photoes without erasing the iPod?

  109. This definately works - I had a new hard drive fitted into my comp and thought I would never be able to get my stuff across from my ipod to itunes, and I didn’t really like the idea of downloading software. Took me a little while - but definately worth it, thanks a million!

  118. I don’t get when you say: IMPORTANT It might also be a good idea to have your iPod manually update for now, so you do not lose your entire music collection. To do this click on Edit tab, and click preferences. Choose iPod and first tab, Music. On the third selection you can tell your iPod to manually update, meaning you drag and drop things you want on it(you can always change this later).

  123. This is actually not that slow and seems to be working really well, though manually updating is much easier on mine - i only needed to click in the left hand navigation and select manually transfer. Consolidation option is in the advanced tab at the top of the screen. Make sure the music is consolidating to the right place - in Edit>Options>Advanced.

A lot of the time, all the files are deleted when you try and do something else while iTunes is busy, I think that’s how I messed up my computer files in the first place - so don’t fiddle till you know iTunes isn’t doing anything.

    Thanks!
