6th Generation iPod - What We Know
Ever since February of this year, the mp3 player rumor mills have been churning out post after post about the upcoming 6th generation iPod. Words of release dates, patent information, and fan made photoshop mockups have been all across the web. However, what of all the hype is real, and what is just hope? The following is a brief rundown of all the info we currently have heard about the 6th gen iPod and how it stacks up against the facts.
2.11.06 - Touchscreen Patent.
From all accounts the patent application (seen here) appears to be the real deal. The patent was published on Feb. 2, 2006 and shows great detail about the workings of an up and coming touchscreen for the iPod. The patent shows figures that depict a translucent touchscreen scroll wheel that appears and disappears over the main screen of the iPod. This technology appears to be inline with Apple’s current products while simultaneously revolutionizing their line of mp3 players as well. None of their products, since the Newton, has utilized a touchscreen, so this could really be a breakthrough for the modern market.
2.24.06 - The Leaked Photo
This photo, supposedly leaked from deep inside Cupertino, has been one of the most controversial elements of all the 6th generation iPod rumors. It looked very similar to the 5th generation iPod photos that came out the day before they were released. This very fact led many to believe that this was indeed, the real deal. However, less than a week after this picture made the rounds of all the tech news sites, a video appeared on YouTube showing exactly how this picture was made. The video, while demonstrating some masterful Photoshop skills, pretty much closed the case on the small chance that this pic was real. Many diehards, however, point to some small descrepancies between the video and the image. These descrepancies are few and do little to actually give the picture any real credit.
2.28.06 - Jobs Keynote
On the day that many expected the 6th gen iPod to finally make it’s appearance Apple dropped a bombshell (not the good kind). At the Steve Jobs Keynote, the iPod Hi-Fi, an iPod enabled boombox that almost no one has bought, was released instead of the much anticipated new iPod. This announcement proved to be a letdown for all Apple fans as there was neither a new iPod nor was any new info released. The world now waited for Apple’s 30th anniversary for any big announcements. Unfortunately, this happened to fall on April Fool’s day.
3.06.06 - More Pictures and Video
Again we have more “leaked” pictures of the new iPod. We’ve heard no word whether these images are photoshopped or not, but we aren’t holding our breath. These pics supposedly were snapped on top of the new iPod Hi-Fi, which may or may not give it more credibility - you decide.
Also on this day, a new video emerges of the supposed 6th generation iPod in action. The video is very short (3 seconds) but shows some very interesting promise. The video shows the translucent touch scroll wheel in action as a movie is played in widescreen format. The video also depicts a dropdown bar that appears only when the controls are accessed. While there is no proof of this video’s authenticity it provides alot of extra excitement over the new iPod. In my personal opinion, this is real. Eventhough the video could have been faked, there is now just too much evidence pointing to an full touch-screen iPod.
4.01.06 - Apple’s 30th Anniversary
This day marked the 30th anniversary of Apple. Because of this, many people expected a big announcement to be made, possibly about the new iPod. However, this day also happens to be April Fool’s Day, the one day of the year that the entire internet seems to implode on itself. Several sites claimed to be at the Apple press conference where the new iPod was being announced. This, of course, was a joke. Apple was surprisingly silent on this day, as no new info was released at all regarding the 6th gen player.
4.13.06 - The Delay
This was the last piece of gossip that we received regarding the new iPod. Supposedly, there was some type of problem with the touch screen interface and Apple wisely decided to hold the entire shipment until all issues were resolved. I’m not sure if I buy this, but I suppose it is plausible. The new release date on the street is sometime in Q4 of this year, just before the holidy season.
While the past five months have proved to be kind of crazy regarding the new 6th generation iPod, we are definitely on the verge of a new product release. Whether it be the holiday season or sometime before, we are eagerly waiting for it so we can snatch one up and review it as soon as humanly possible.

The problem with a touchscreen interface is that they would have to bundle some sort of protective cover with it so that when its in your backpack or pocket it doesnt change songs, because the touch screen would be more sensitive. Beyond that a very cool Idea that utilizes the whole player as a screen.
guessing they would have a hard button on the side of it, where you could slide it to turn off the screen, to save battery and stop random push’s.

No, the real problem is how they are going to solve the current iPod screen issue: scratches. iPod screens getting scratched and mucked has been a problem since 1G, with little improvement since.
Combine that with the grub everyone has growing on their fingers, there’s no way it’s a touch-screen.

Although I can’t provide any real proof, I have actually seen the working 6th gen, and can confirm that the video above is real. Also expect to see a iSight mini attachment for taking pictures with your 6thgen iPod.

Lame article I’m afraid - those pictures have been proved fake.
Scratches on iPods can be easily fixed with tissue and Brasso metal polish. Battery life would be a huge concern on a big touch screen, especially drawing the menu over a playing video (requires lots of processor power). I think it’d be most likely to fold out, more than anything else.

Although touch screenshave been used in other products, the patent shown above indicates that the 6th gen will use not just any touch screen, but a screen which uses multi touch sensing to register which part of the screen is being manipulated.
It looks massively cool.

If it is real, I think it would be 80gb, because toshiba recently came out with a hdd that size. Also the iPod would have a hold switch so buttons can not be pressed in your pocket.

This is a tester holding the iPod. he sais it’s a pre-test. testing the video frame rate and how good the quality is. also testing some new codecs like Xvid, Divx, mpeg-4 video in a .pgg format, unprotected WMV. and pitures like RAW, the new JPEG-20 or somenthing like that. lokks like it’s a 500 by 320 pixels. will have a pda-like screen. didin’t gave more info. he says it’s all classified. So if the screen on the iPod Nano drains the battery, when it’s only 1/3rd the size of the player; what will a full-length touch screen do??

Any speculation on the rumored September 12th media event. The invitations supposedly say “It’s Showtime” with the standard Hollywood searchlight graphics. My guess is they will announce a deal with at least Disney and also release the new 6th gen iPod. That’s my hope anyway. I’ve been holding off on replacing my 2nd gen iPod until they finally release this thing. If it is anything like the speculation, I’ll be first in line!!!

Personally, I think the rumours are BS. There are too many limiting factors in a touchscreen iPod, most of which have been listed in the above comments. It’s just untypical of Apple to release a super-fragile, battery-power-mongering, more-expensive-than-usual machine. Nobody would buy it. Considering that Apple’s success is mostly due to their popularity with the masses, I highly doubt that there’s any truth to the rumours.
Also, I don’t mean to plug but, check www.agent18.com for lightweight, clear plastic cases. I had one for a year on my old iPod Mini, and I never got a single scratch on the body or screen (except for the clickwheel, which was out in the open for easy use). The iPod broke after a year, but the case is still fine. Go figure.
IF, and i do say IF it has a touch screen, then scratches will will be a thing of the past.
For anyone who owns a Palm (I have a TX) the screen CAN be scratched, but you get screen protectors for them. Otherwise, the screen is layered in plastic that does scratch, but a lot less easily than the hard plastic on the iPod / Nano devices.

The announcement of Sept. 12th proves to me at least that there is NO imminent release of a 6th gen iPod. Think about it for a moment, why would Apple bring out an enhanced 5th gen only to make it obsolete a couple of weeks/months later? Just imagine the grief that would cause Apple from all the people who go out and buy the new 5th gen, it would be a PR disaster.
the enhanced 5th gen? does this not sound similar to something else apple has done in the past? iPod photo anyone? If im not mistaken (which is possible haha) the 4th gen came out, stayed for a while then the photo version came out after which just a little later the 5th gen was released. Apple just updated the shuffle and nano, why wouldnt the iPod itself be not too far behind?

i think the touch screen interface would be an awesome idea. Some people are worrying that the iPod might get scratched alot easier since the screen would be so sensitive. There’s no reason why I should have to carry around an FM receiver as well, it should be implemented into the device. A good portable tape/CD player will have an FM tuner; it’s not hard to implement. I can see a commercial reason for not including it for Apple, though. The less you listen to free radio, the more you must pay for music through iTunes. You should be able to record live radio, too, of course.
* A recorder/mic on board the iPod. Again, not easy to implement but would be very useful. Creative and Microsoft have an on board mic so Apple should be able to keep up. Simple feature, should be there, but isn’t.
Those two things are putting me off buying an iPod over a Creative or Microsoft product.

One would assume that this alleged 6th gen touch-screen masterpiece would not be able to hold anywhere near 140gb worth of media. I’m afraid that with all this touch screen fangledness there wont be hardly any rise in the hard-drive capacity.
Plus, the release will be timed perfectly to conicide with the dropping slaes of Microsoft’s Zune in the US, and to be released before, if not at the same time as the Zune in the UK

If they do the 3.5 inch screen it wonta have a click wheel on the touch sensitive screen. It would have the same scrolling as the iphone where u move the songs up and down and touch the song you wanna play.

They knew they were going to release the “iPhone” (which incidentally is trademarked by Cisco Systems…), so they will capture everyone they can in the phone market before releasing the 6Gen. When demand for their phone in the cell phone market starts to level out, then Apple will plan the introduction to the 6Gen iPod. It all comes down to Marketing and money… it always does.
my 4th gen ipod died. i have store credit for a new one. i am wondering if i should wait until the 6th gen comes out? i use it all the time and don’t if it’s worth the wait. any suggestions?

I would like to get an IPOD, I’ve been taking my Sony CD player with me for the last 2-3 years and hauling the cd’s is a pain.
Sure wish IPOD did FLAC format though, so I could encode my audio cd’s in a lossless format.

I can agree with the author on every single rumor that has flown out of California concerning the 6th Generation iPod. My belief is that the 6th Generation iPod will have its debut around Thanksgiving/1st week of December since it’s around that time that Apple enjoys to announce to the world whats the next best thing to buy for the holiday season. And whats going to be on every humans list around the holiday season? The newest iPod.

Let’s face it people, chances are that the 6th Gen iPod will just be a redesign with a larger storage capacity (my guess is 50 and 100 GB). I bet that, based on the redesign of the iPod Nano and the Shuffle, that they will most likely opt for an aluminum case for the full size iPod and, as with the iPod mini and the 2nd Gen Nano, offer the full size version in multiple colors, not just black and white.

It seems to me that the tech side of iphone will be moved into the ipod arena … touchscreen will happen … hard drives will jump in size … and ipod will also become a nav sat for your car including maps when offline … take the need for a mobile phone away such as mics and ear pieces and remove any phone parts and then you add a wireless connection just for internet … now you have a computer/mp3 player/nav sat/vid player/and data storage/and internet tv … just what I need even if it is slighty bigger than todays ipod… my cell phone works fine .. i dont need an iphone.

From what I hear it will look like the pics above, have the same GB/Battery combinations as the current iPod videos(30 and 80 GB, NOT 30 and 60). I think that they will release the next iPods in November/ early December in time for the christmas shopping season (hell months).
