For all of you who got an ipod video for christmas a new one in the making! Apple really likes to stay ahead of things and this proves it. The first image I have is the actual patent request that apple submitted.
Looking at it, it seems that the ipod will have a touch screen in which you will be able to navigate around on like the current ipods. Sources have reported that the entire front of the ipod will be a touch screen. The ENTIRE FRONT! w00t that is a lot of screen! There is a lot of speculation that the release date will be revealed at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco on April 1st which just happens to be apple’s 30th year anniversary. Just to tickle your toenails here are a few mock images.

If this thing is for real, Apple has done it again. They consistently amaze me with every new iPod they release. The Nano–brilliant. The Video–brilliant. This–BRILLIANT. My only concern is scratching/smudging the screen. That’s a whole lotta’ screen to keep protected, and I’m already paranoid about my Nano. Other than that, well, I’ve already said it.

Couldn’t apple just put the click wheel on the head phones???? Sony did this with their play/pause control for the psp. Apple obviously know what they’re doing because they have that radio thing among the accessories they offer for the iPod.
If it is a prank, Apple should make it anyways. Most comments I read from other sites like Engadget had good responses to it. I for one would buy this new Video ipod. I like my current video ipod but that wide screen looks c00l.
I have owned 4 ipods so far. I have grown VERY dependent on them. I love my 5th Gen and use both its audio and vidio features often. THAT SAID, I’,m sick of buying these damn things! I keep my 5th gen in a iSkin Evo to protect the screen an it does a great job. I would not want to be with out it. I doubt that a 6th gen iPod with a touch screen would work if it was covered with any kind of protection. I could be wrong though. Nevertheless I hope they have a soultion for the easily scratched screens for gen 6. Why not put the click wheel on the back and forget about touchscreen altogether. You would be able to protect the screen at least while keeping the large format. Navigating a clickwheel on the back would probably be tricky at first but after a while it probably would become second nature.
I hate to break it to you all, but it is a fake. The US patent US 2006/0026535 A1 is assigned to a different type of apple touch screen (seen here: http://mrl.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/ ). It is pretty easy to do some research on simple patents.

When will this new generation ipod actually release. I am really waiting for it. Hope it turns out to be better than its predecessors. The futuristic touchscreen looks rather impressive. As long as it dosent have the battery problems synonymous with the previous pods… it should be one of the best gadgets of the decade.

I trawled around the shops yesterday looking for the 30Gb iPod. No one had any stock. Currys Digital told me it was becasue a new one was due soon. I then tried John Lewis in Sheffield who were quite explicit. They already had the 8Gb nano, and expected the Movie iPod either this week or next.

If a 6 gen, with a camera, with 60 gigs, and the ability to carry music, videos, AND all be in a little box. then imagine how much it must cost. and also Apple has to keep up with is competetors (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) which both are expecting huge profits from Halo 3, PS 3, Nintendo revolution. if you think about it apple needs to come out with a futuristic idea of its own and 6th gen vid could be it. That;s the stupidest thing i’ve seen. Not only is the screen on the iPod currently inferior to creative’s many video capable mp3 players, but now to get a bigger screen you’re going to be required to leave your fingerprints on it. Then, they’re doing away with the click wheel, that was the only thing going for it in the first place. Now I’m sure that iPod freaks will just love this full screen pos because well, they don’t know any better, but damn if they think that people will want to watch movies through smudged screens they’re retarded.

If people haven’t realised already that every electronic device has been made with a specific life expectancy, then I think they are a little nieve. Without dissing Apple (I have an ipod) ofcourse they make items without the intention to last the next 10 years. just look at the 1st generation ipod! My nano is sturdy and I have had no probs. I can’t wait to buy a 5g ipod, but Im not sure about the 6g. It’s a bit weird that it was supposed to be presented in April and it’s now November. Im sure if Apple is going to do something they will do it properly. In the mean time, I’ll get a 5g.

this is the concept that ive been waiting for, the only real reason ive never wanted a video ipod is for the small screen size, but this is one i can work with. even if this is jst a hoaxe, apple should really think this idea over, it has immense potential.
I’m sure there won’t be fingerprint problems. The people at Apple aren’t retarded, they know this would be a potential problem and I’m sure they will/have come up with a solution. I don’t think protective surfaces will effect your ability to use the touch screen. Just look at Nintendo’s DS. It had a touch screen that you could use a stylus on and even your finger, I used an invisible sheild and it didn’t leave scratches or smudges. Maybe you guys just have dirty fingers -_-
The 6th Gen iPod will be solid and you can count on that. Not only are the people at Apple “not retarded” but they will also need it to be flawless now that Microsoft has came out with the Zune. It has the same amount of memory with a bigger screen for the same price. I wouldnt worry about the screen scratching or anything like that. The new iPod will be perfect.

I bought a 6th Gen 30GB last month.
It’s not touch screen/full screen. Screen is 2.5″ QVGA, same as 5th Gen. Also it does use a USB cable.

what that guy was talking about isn’t the 6th gen or the 5th..it is an updated 5th gen known as the “5.5 gen”, it has a 60% brighter screen,a search feature, and an increased video battery life (6.5 hours), i found out today from a work associate (i work at Jb hifi) that the new ipod 6th gen, will have bluetooth and will be avaliable in around mid year 2007, personally, i cannot wait

like what some ine said before people complain about the smudge on the metal and screen. imagine the hwole screen and since it’s touch screen, kinda hard to make a full body cover for it like the Evo3 from iSkin. Possibly easy to crack the screen cause it’s so big. but very nice concept.
This sounds like a sound idea, but it would have flaws. I have a 30GB Black Ipod Video, which is amazing! But a touch screen would ruin it. I mean, fingerprints on the screen, scratches on the screen, sensitive to everything. The one I have now is good. If it is any good, I would wait until the next one would come out or until it gets cheaper. It will probably be pretty expensive when it first comes out anyway.

I have heard a possibility of having all of the controls on the outside rim of the iPod. If this were to be true, i think it would be good to still be touch sensitive, like the chocolate phone everyone is so crazy about. This would eliminate the need to actually touch the screen. Besides, they can just come out with a replacable screen protector so when one of them gets too smudged then you can just switch them out. A stylus would also be a great idea, but this could get annoying having to learn all of the different actions that one might have to do, such as the weird stylus alphabet that so many other PDA’s have as so called short cuts. another thing, i dont understand why apple would want to make the ipod bluetooth capable, the only thing that it would help with would be not needing to plug your ipod into update, which you would want to do anyways to charge it up. who knows though…maybe they will have it so you can download songs wirelessly from designated bluetooth areas such as an apple store or any other apple distributer. im excited to hear what is truly going to take place from the actual mouth of Steve Jobs. either way, this will be another leap for the technology in mp3 players

I went to the Intel factory and museum outside San Francisco in California. In their museum they used touch screen displays, but the screen was made from a material that left no fingermarks no smudges… After all those people touching the screens I couldn’t see a smudge! They were crystal clear displays, and felt soft, sort of like a laptop screen. But as I said, no fingermarks. Btw I had a damn good look, I’m not mistaken.

The problem I have with the touchscreen is simple. The idea is cool for most uses but I have a problem with changing songs or volume while driving. I need the button tactile feel so I can keep my eyes on the road. The “new improvements” make them unuseable for driving. And adding Voice Command won’t work if the stereo is too loud. I love listening to music loud while driving on the open road but turn it down in populated areas or when near other cars. If I am 1/4 mile away from anyone I am going to turn it up all the way! But, if I can’t turn it down quickly then I have a problem with it.
